The Muslim designer who made history
I don’t normally write about a designer from fashion week, whether it’s in Australia or America but as a fellow modest fashionista I felt that I had to write about the one and only Indonesian Muslim fashion designer named Anniesa Hasibuan.
If you are a fashion fanatic then surely you would have seen a few headlines on Facebook such as Anniesa Hasibuan’s NYFW Show Featured Hijabs, Anniesa Hasibuan Becomes First Designer to Present NYFW Collection with Hijabs or Indonesian designer showcases the first all hijabi show at New York Fashion Week just to name a few.
I actually saw sneak peaks via Mariaalia’s “snapchat” story via instagram so I kind of already knew about it and had the opportunity to see some of the designs which are absolutely breathtaking.
Anniesa was born in Jakarta and is married to fellow entrepreneur and founder of First Travel, Andika Surachman. Anniesa partnered with her husband in self-employment and pursued the Umrah travel. However, in her spare time she enjoyed fashion design. Whilst attending business meetings with clients and partners alongside her husband it was a requirement for them to always be neatly and professionally dressed, this is why she decided to design her own clothes for work as well as formal clothes.
Whilst Anniesa was abroad in London last year, she wore one of her pieces to an event and was fortunate enough to have one of the Event Organisers ask Anniesa to hold a fashion show to showcase her designs. Since then, she had the up most pleasure of showcasing her designs at this years New York Fashion Week and is one of the first designers to showcase their collection in Hijabs! Did I also mention that she is the first Indonesian to present her collection at NYFW and that she won Best Fashion Designer in 2015? (Queue in “Run the World” by Beyonce)
Anniesa’s collection is called De Jayakarta which is made up of 38 ready-to-wear pieces and 10 evening looks. The collection was inspired by her hometown, Jakarta and includes pieces such as trousers, suits, kimonos, tunics, gowns you name it. It was every modest girls dream. I love how the outfits are designed to be mixed and matched so we can actually wear the pieces off the runway. Not all of us were blessed with a skinny figure and long legs. Let’s be honest.
‘I want to bring the Indonesian name to the fashion world, and use my clothes to introduce people to the different and diverse parts of Indonesia,’ Anniesa told The Jakarta Post.
De Jayakarta possess intricately embroidered gowns and accessories, jewelry that you will add to your wishlist and metallic brocade tops. Garments came in beautiful blush pink, emerald green, lavender, peach, pastel blue, nudes, creams and so on. Plus gorgeous and unique patterns that is bound to get your heart racing. With all these beautiful colours and embellishments the one thing that got everyone talking was of course the beautiful models wearing a hijab.
Anniesa literally made history at this years NYFW in the most inspiring way. So much so that she was given a standing ovation which is a rare sight at fashion week and for a one year old brand, that’s saying something.
As an aspiring Muslim fashion influencer, I found this to be so inspiring and excited for my future and I hope to see more of these shows in the future from other modest designers like Anniesa. See? Muslimahs know a thing or to about fashion even if they have to wear “that thing on their head”.
Have you seen the collection yet? What was your favourite piece? Mine was the gorgeous white gown with gold, silver and rose gold detailing with a stunning lace and embroidered veil. Speechless.
